Strong Start for 3DS

Nintendo Co. said first-day sales for its new hand-held game device in the U.S. set a company record, signaling a potential revitalization of the company's mobile efforts.

Nintendo of America didn't provide actual sales data, but a spokesman said more details about U.S. sales figures will be made available on April 14. The 3DS was released in the U.S. on Monday.

The early success of the 3DS suggests it could surpass the company's popular DSi hand-held device, which sold 435,000 units in the U.S. during its first week of sales in 2009.

Great read Paul, thanks. What do you think of Roomba and the like, robot? or not. I like the autonomous bots that just get things done. Also, do you remember the Big Trak, it was a programmable toy from the 70s. http://www.bugeyedmonster.com/toys/bigtrak/ Do you consider this a bot? I guess what I am getting at is, do you see only humanoids (ASIMO) as bots or any programmable device?

Thanks again.

btw, I really hope you, Patel, Chris and Josh are going to be putting something together soon. Maybe, a gadget blog? (-:

Modifications/Corrections:

I disagree with you that the 3DS (the most pre-ordered video games system in Amazon UK's history) will be less successful than its DSi XL predecessor.

And just because the iPhone is ubiquitous, not everyone is into mobile gaming (ask Rovio Mobile) or is dedicated solely to a portable gaming device (ask Zynga) let alone to just one.

I recently re-watched the Steve Jobs / Bill Gates dual interview from the D conference. That is where Steve originally mentioned this term "post-PC", at least as far as I can tell. It is a pretty amazing thing to re-watch now--Steve had *just* announced the iPhone, the app store didn't exist yet, and the iPad was still gestating in the great Apple womb. At several points in the interview, Jobs coyly says "we're working on something, it's going to be great, but I can't talk about it"-- and looking back, it is clear that even at that time he saw this entire ecosystem of the future, including the iPad. What's even more remarkable is to listen to Bill Gates talk about his thoughts on the device of the future--if you didn't know better you might think that he is describing the iPad, Xoom, or HTC Flyer (since he does talk about using "ink").

Paul, you probably remember that interview, but I think you'd get a kick out of re-watching it, too. http://video.allthingsd.com/video/steve-jobs-and-bill-gates-at-d/A72CB40D-3365-438D-A018-9A2AA2259E54/
